Like a message you’ve drafted but never dared to send: Luís Fernandes’ latest single, ‘Think Twice’

Luís Fernandes, a London-based artist and producer from Portugal, released his new single, Think Twice on June 19th. Juxtaposing upbeat instrumentation with vulnerable lyricism, Luís creates the perfect track for anyone who’s ever found themselves stuck in a toxic situationship.

Luís has been making waves in the indie-pop scene since 2020, fusing his classical and folk roots with modern bedroom-pop. Known for his heartfelt lyrics and DIY production style, Luís’ infectious new track follows the release of his recent single, Morning Sun by diving deeper into the wreckage of love, regret and self-discovery.

The production is deceptively bright, practically begging to be played loudly and proudly in the car with all the windows down, heading towards a beach. Yet the lyrics, as always with Luís’ music, hit like a message you’ve drafted but never dared to send.

Luís explained, “I wrote Think Twice about falling for someone who won’t meet you halfway, that in between of wanting love but not wanting to settle. It’s a take on love I hadn’t written about previously, sort of acknowledging your own part in a relationship’s demise.”

The song starts with a confession “I’m tired of waiting for someone else to come sweep me off my feet/ I’m done with complaining that life’s too short to be feeling incomplete.” Words that feel almost too familiar; whether you’ve shared them with a friend over FaceTime, a stranger in a club toilet, or (for the truly brave) to the person who is the cause. That self-aware yearning of knowing what you deserve, but still chasing someone who doesn’t serve you.

Luís continues after the chorus, “I’m playing your games every god damn day/ I keep losing track of time/ I’m foolishly craving every part of you but you lost your appetite.” Here he captures the emotional exhaustion of trying to maintain a relationship that is slipping away. The sound of someone still trying, still hoping despite the other person having already emotionally checked out.

The song finishes with the chorus one final time, and then repeats “guess I have to think twice,” no longer speaking to someone else but to himself as a piece of advice. A reminder that despite how great it always feels at the start his next relationship could end the same.

If you love raw, relatable lyricism and the work of artists like Lizzie McAlpine, Fleetwood Mac and Taylor Swift, Luís Fernandes’ latest release is a must-add to any summer sadness playlists.

As always, make sure to follow Luís on Instagram to stay in-the-know about what’s next for him, and listen to the rest of his music on Spotify:
